Under the direction of the Municipal Golf Course Superintendent or designee, the Starter/Ranger performs a variety of duties to support daily golf operations. Responsibilities include directing the start of daily play and tournaments, verifying players’ tickets and payments, and overseeing compliance with dress code, safety standards, and appropriate conduct. This position is also responsible for maintaining the starter shack and first tee area. Ranger duties include patrolling the course to monitor pace of play and ensure adherence to course rules and regulations. The position exercises the authority to address violations and may remove golfers or spectators who fail to comply with course regulations or who damage property. Additional responsibilities include posting signs, repairing ball marks, collecting trash, ensuring trap rakes are properly placed, conducting safety checks of equipment prior to use, and reporting unsafe or malfunctioning conditions. Work assignments may be performed independently or as a part of a crew.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Starter Duties:
- Direct the starting of individual golfers or groups for play on the golf course.
- Determine the order of play based on the daily tee time sheet provided by the Pro Shop prior to opening.
- Track ticket numbers in a logbook throughout the season.
- Verify that every player possesses a valid ticket prior to teeing off. Ensure tickers are time-or paper punched and that ticket numbers are in proper sequence for the day. No unlimited golf is permitted; only valid tickets or approved gift certificates may be accepted.
- Oversee play to ensure orderly conduct and safe competition for all patrons.
- Maintain the starter shack and first tee area, including removal of trash in general area.
- Enforce the golf course dress code. Prohibited attire includes tank tops, sleeveless shirts, cut-off jeans, and short shorts. Individuals who are not compliant must be asked to change or be denied access to the course.
- Contact the Pro Shop during foul or questionable weather conditions for operational direction. May be assigned temporary duties within grade level during such conditions.
- During tournaments, review the tee time sheet to ensure all participants have valid tickets. Upon completion, document whether groups were organized on time and note any delays, gaps, or length of play concerns.
- Assist with Junior Golf Camp week as assigned.
Ranger Duties:
- Patrol the course to monitor pace of play and ensure compliance with playing rules.
- Verify payment of fees when necessary.
- Perform safety checks of equipment prior to each use and report malfunctioning or unsafe conditions of equipment to appropriate personnel or supervisor.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment for self, coworkers, and patrons.
- Present oneself professionally at all times in both communication and appearance as a representative of the Town of Ludlow and Westover Municipal Golf Course.
- Perform related duties as required or directed by the Golf Course Superintendent or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. Six months’ experience working in a customer service environment and knowledge and understanding of the principles of golf preferred. Commitment to working both opening and closing shifts, as well as performing all tasks required in opening and closing the Golf Course. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to understand and follow work instructions and assignments, is required. Must be able to successfully pass a CORI background check. The ideal candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, the ability to maintain professional working relationships with co-workers and the public, and the initiative to work independently. Regular and punctual attendance is a requirement of the position as well as the ability to work daytime and evening hours, including weekdays, weekends and holidays as needed.
