Historical Commission

Overview

The Ludlow Historical Commission is the local body charged with preserving, protecting, and developing the historical and archaeological resources of the Town of Ludlow. The Commission works closely with the Massachusetts Historical Commission and other partners to identify significant sites, structures, and artifacts and to promote awareness of Ludlow’s history.

Powers and Duties

The Historical Commission’s primary responsibilities include:

  1. Conducting research and surveys to identify places of historic and archaeological value in Ludlow.
  2. Cooperating with the State Archeologist and the Massachusetts Historical Commission on preservation efforts and documentation.
  3. Coordinating with local historical groups and other unofficial organizations with similar goals.
  4. Advising town boards and departments on projects or proposals that may affect historic or archaeological resources.

Community Role

The Commission helps residents, property owners, and developers understand the historic significance of buildings, neighborhoods, and sites in Ludlow. It may provide guidance on preservation, rehabilitation, and recognition of historic properties, and it supports efforts to document and share the town’s heritage through publications, programs, and displays.
