The Light Equipment Operator (PW2) is responsible for operating a variety of vehicles and light equipment, as well as performing manual labor tasks. Assignments may be carried out independently or as part of a crew, supporting all divisions within the Department of Public Works (DPW). This is a full-time, benefited, union position, requiring 40 hours per week. Work hours may vary and can include nights and weekends as needed for construction projects or emergency operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand and follow work instructions and assignments; independently perform vehicle and light equipment operations as directed by a supervisor.
- Demonstrate the physical ability to perform required duties, including operating trucks, light equipment, and machinery.
- Operate all vehicles and equipment requiring a Massachusetts Class B CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements, including but not limited to dump trucks, snowplows, truck and trailer combinations, sanders, and other vehicles requiring a Class B CDL.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures; use appropriate safety equipment and devices during work assignments.
- Comply with all local and state motor vehicle laws and regulations while operating Town vehicles under a valid license.
- Work independently on assignments or projects of limited scope, as instructed by a supervisor.
- Operate various vehicles and light equipment (e.g., sanders, snowplows) during snow removal operations and other declared emergencies or events.
- Perform routine safety inspections of vehicles and equipment; report any malfunctions or unsafe conditions to the supervisor promptly.
- Keep work areas, vehicles, and equipment clean and orderly.
- Perform duties of a Laborer (PW1) and other related tasks as required or directed by the supervisor or designee.
- Note:
Employees in the Department of Public Works are federally designated as First Responders and are therefore responsible for maintaining and repairing damaged infrastructure and ensuring public safety during emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent; a minimum of one (1) year of experience and/or equivalent training as a light equipment operator; a valid Mass. Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake/Tanker Endorsement; experience with sewer collection systems and sewage pump station inspection/maintenance preferred. Applicant must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and as part of a crew; sound decision-making skills in emergency situations; positive interpersonal skills for effective interaction with coworkers, supervisors, Town officials/employees, and the public; and a professional demeanor as a representative of the Town of Ludlow is required to represent the Town of Ludlow and the DPW effectively.
