Paralibrarian I

The circulation assistant is responsible for clerical and direct service work in connection with circulation and basic reference service. This position requires constant contact with the public and is under the supervision of the Library Director. The circulation assistant also performs duties the Director deems necessary as consistent with the employee’s training and ability. Employee must be able to work one evening per week and alternate Saturdays.

  • Provides information, instruction, and assistance to library patrons on programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of automated circulation system, checking out, discharging, renewing, and registering new patrons.
  • Searches network database for materials requested by patrons, reserves materials, and informs patrons of their arrival.
  • Collects charges for lost, damaged or overdue materials.
  • Assists patrons in the use of various library equipment i.e., photocopier, or print stations.
  • Routes telephone calls or messages to appropriate department.
  • Maintains organization of library materials.
  • Provides basic directional and reader advisory services.
  • Responsible for emptying book-drop.
  • Assists with running paging slips, pulling holds, and filing holds on the hold-shelf.
  • Assists professional and technical staff with programs and duties.
  • Helps compile library statistics as needed.
  • Attends professional development, i.e., workshops, meetings, or webinars as required.
  • Performs similar or related work as directed by the Library Director and/or designee.

Qualified applicants must have an associate’s degree with at least one year of experience in the library field, or equivalent work experience.  Bachelor’s degree is preferred.  Knowledge of modern library operations, including circulation and information access.  Ability to follow detailed directions, multitask, and adhere to established procedures, especially in emergency situations, under the direction of senior staff.  Possess excellent customer service skills.  Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office software.
